Gun Control Debate
The possession and usage of gun and other firearms are controlled by gun laws in USA. This law is not the same and the restriction imposed differs from one state to other. In some states the possession of gun is strictly based on the issue of permit by the concerned authorities to the individual. In few other states there are no such restrictions and the guns or firearms can be possessed by anyone without a permit. But these are just local restrictions and when goes out of a particular state and enters the next state then the person have to follow the gun laws of the state where he is at present.
The variation of gun laws between each of the state had always been a matter of debate. There have been several political and social debates going on with the United States, to regulate this possession and usage as a common law without controversies between each state. Though through the second amendment the Supreme Court of the United States have stated that it is legal to possess a gun within one’s home for the purpose of safety, this still remains a debate with the increasing rate of misuse. Recent polling of the public regarding this controversy shows the result that majority of the population supports the decision of Supreme Court and they are against the heavy restrictions imposed on the possession of guns. They even consider this as a form of culture and ‘American identity’.
The possession of gun has been a practice since a long time ago. In history it can be seen that many person in the state possessed guns mainly for the purpose of hunting and this was even considered as the matter of pride. Over time, the usage was differed and people started using it during revolution. And it was then that the need for a proper regulation for the possession and usage of guns and other firearms was felt.
By 20th century, a clearly written set of laws termed as gun laws was introduced with various special features in the possession of guns. This gun law was then made unique to each of the state and was rewritten according to the state consent.
The usage of gun is still in the debate and there are two political groups, one arguing that the possession of gun increases crime whereas the other group argues that the possession of gun increases self defense hence decreases crime.
Though the argument is still prevalent, new gun laws are still been introduced in this case and the restrictions in usage of guns and firearms are get stricter. This is mainly because of the misuse of guns in the public place and on the innocent. Recently many gun free zones have been identified by each of the state where the possession of guns or firearms is strictly prohibited. This includes educational institutions, mainly schools, certain industries and many crowded public places.
Thus the debate on the possession of the gun is still going on and its difficult to judge for anyone as to the gun laws are really needed or not, as it depends mostly on the conduct of the individual.
